Colgate Oversight
The Committee on Information Technology (CIT) is an advisory committee to the Dean of the Faculty on IT policy issues. Specific questions regarding website content should be emailed to the Office of Public Relations and Communications; questions about access should be emailed to the ITS Administrative Systems Team.
Reports of abuse, policy infringement, or questions should be brought to the attention by emailing the Administrative Systems Team, and/or the communications office.
Technical problems, helpful suggestions, or other comments should be directed to the authors of specific pages if they do not fall under the aegis of ITS, please email the communication office.
Publishing on the Colgate Web Servers
All recognized University organizations are allowed and encouraged to publish pages using Google sites, which is accessable via your GAfE (Google Apps for Education) account.
All personal pages on the campus network are subject to Colgate policies and the editorial policies defined herein. Colgate does not guarantee server resources for personal pages.
Editorial Policy
Publication of material that violates University policy, as spelled out in the 'Faculty Handbook,' the Staff Handbook (select the 'Staff Handbook' link from the Human Resources website) and the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, is prohibited.
Colgate reserves the right to control its resources, including, but not limited to, denying materials space on University-supported servers.
Hosting Policy
1. Colgate is a non-profit entity and does not host sites for commercial entities not legally affiliated with the University.
2. To the extent possible with available resources, Information Technology Services will provide limited server space to non-profit organizations under the following conditions:
a. A member of the Colgate faculty, administration, or staff is a member of the organization for purposes related to professional responsibilities at Colgate and agrees to maintain the site on behalf of the organization, OR
b. The chair, director, or similarly responsible person from a Colgate University department, program, office, institute, or other administrative unit attests that the hosting of the site is in Colgate University's interest and accepts or delegates responsibility for maintenance of the site.
3. All hosted sites are subject to Colgate University policies, including policies regarding harassment and intellectual property.
4. Authoring/editing privileges on Colgate University servers are made available only to Colgate employees except at the discretion of the Chief Information Officer.
5. Information Technology Services provides only limited technical support and does not provide design services for hosted sites.
Accountability
Colgate pages, like all Web page, provide links to sites across the Internet. Users should be aware that Colgate does not control the content (including decency and legality) of pages outside the University.
Colgate expects publishers of information over the campus network to accept full editorial responsibility for their documents. Colgate University provides space for individually-designed personal pages on our web servers. We expect all students, faculty, and staff to follow the copyright law and the Colgate University web page guidelines; however, the comments and viewpoints expressed on the personal pages represent those of the page authors and not Colgate University. Comments or suggestions regarding these personal pages should be directed to the authors.
Running a Web site involves the continuing development of new pages and the updating of old pages. Linking pages from Colgate implies an obligation to maintain and update those pages. Pages that are not maintained or reviewed may be removed from the Colgate system by The Committee on Information Technology (CIT).
Support
Colgate University fully supports all pages created under the direction of The Committee on Information Technology (CIT). Limited resources restrict support for the independent publication of documents on Colgate. Please contact the Administrative System Team for more information.
Colgate does not, in general, allow Web, Gopher or FTP servers that are not the property of the college to be connected to its network and internet node. Students, employees, or campus organizations who wish to pursue academic projects that can not be accommodated by the Colgate servers may apply to The Committee on Information Technology (CIT) for permission to set up a server. Colgate reserves the right to disconnect any server from its network for any reason.
Infringements of University policy within the Colgate network or on any campus server should be reported to David Gregory, Chief Information Officer.
