Mission Statement
Colgate has enjoyed a long and rich relationship with its collegiate fraternities and sororities. As an important component of the co-curricular program, Greek letter organizations have supported the mission of the University by providing an enriched out-of-class living/learning experience. Greek chapters have existed on Colgate’s campus since the 19th century, and are characterized by a tradition of campus involvement and leadership.
Supporting Greek life has been an important educational initiative for the campus. Greek organizations have the potential to affect student development in powerful and lasting ways. Organizations that promote leadership, foster scholastic excellence, encourage community service, and develop life-long friendships deserve a prominent place in the University community.
During the 2008 Greek Life Summit students, staff, and alumni came together to discuss the welfare of Greek Life at Colgate University. The summit also helped engage the Greek letter community on the broader Dean of the College priorities: intellectual vibrancy, inclusive community building, and creating a culture of reflection.

As members of the Greek Life Advisory Council, representatives will have the opportunity as a collective group to:
- Unite the members of the Greek Community in the spirit of mutual interest, and to keep open lines of communication between the Greek organizations and the campus community
- Build an inclusive Greek community and enhance the collegiate experience by supporting opportunities for leadership, academic success, civic engagement and the creation of fraternal bonds
- Reflect on fraternity/sorority issues to promote and enhance the quality of Greek Life and the collegiate community at-large
- Assist the Inter-Fraternity Council and National Panhellenic Council in their efforts to further intellectual and social accomplishments of Fraternity/Sorority Life
- Cooperate with the university, community, and administration in the maintenance of high social standards
- Improve and maintain relations between the fraternal/sorority organizations and the surrounding community
The role of the Greek Life Advisory Council can be best summarized into four categories: information gathering and assessment, standards and accountability, advocacy and public relations, leadership, and Greek Life advancement. These categories are how the representatives of GLAC determine its scope of operating within the interest of fraternities and sororities at Colgate University.
