Library: Rare Book Librarian
The Colgate University Libraries seek an enthusiastic and thoughtful individual to manage rare books, manuscripts, and other non-University Archives materials in the Special Collections and University Archives, including their development, organization, description, accessibility, digitization, preservation, promotion and assessment. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and University Archivist, s/he engages in educational planning and instruction, reinforcing the significance of primary source materials as curricular resources, and explores the use of technology to advance teaching, learning and research with special collections materials. S/he manages the Libraries’ major digital projects involving Special Collections materials (student newspaper, yearbooks, alumni magazine, course catalogs, etc.) including digital outsourcing, quality control, preservation, and storage and creates and describes resources digitized locally. Qualifications: An ALA-accredited master’s degree or an equivalent master’s degree and 2 years of experience working in a library, particularly at a liberal arts institution, or museum setting. Library: Systems Librarian
Colgate University Libraries seeks a creative and user-oriented information professional to serve as Systems Librarian. The primary focus will include the Libraries’ integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces/III), interlibrary services system, the Dematic Library Automated Storage and Retrieval (LASR) system, and digital publishing platforms.

Reporting to the Head of Digital Initiatives and Resources, this person will share leadership and responsibility for planning, developing, integrating, implementing, and maintaining the digital systems and services.

The successful candidate will collaborate with librarians, staff, technologists, and faculty in a cutting edge library and technology facility. Ideally, the person will have a strong philosophical and functional grounding or interest in library services and the provision of technical and patron support in a library setting.

The successful candidate will possess the best combination of the following:
  • An ALA-accredited master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with one or more programming or scripting languages and HTML/CSS [required]
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; adaptability, creativity, and an aptitude to learn new technological tools and techniques
  • Working knowledge of an ILS (Innovative Interfaces Millennium/Sierra preferred but not required)
  • Familiarity with the MARC cataloging format
  • Proficiency with standard desktop software and hardware
  • Familiarity with current and emerging trends, standards and technologies, and the intellectual curiosity to investigate, advise, and collaboratively implement new technology solutions.

Mathematics: Mathematics (1-year position)
The Department of Mathematics of Colgate University is accepting applications for a visiting assistant professor for the 2013-2014 academic year. A PhD in the mathematical sciences is preferred, as well as evidence of excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will, in the course of two semesters, teach five sections of our elementary courses (introductory statistics and/or calculus). Physics & Astronomy: Physics (1-year position)
The Colgate University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position in physics to begin in fall 2013. Completion of the Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire, and previous teaching experience is an advantage. We seek a person with a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Academic responsibilities may include teaching an introductory level course for non-majors, courses for physics majors, and courses in Colgate’s Liberal Arts Core Curriculum. Although the candidate will have no research requirements during this appointment, collaboration with current faculty is possible. Colgate is a highly selective liberal arts university of 2800 students situated in a picturesque village in central New York. The department has nine faculty members and maintains well-equipped research laboratories in quantum and optical physics, condensed matter physics, biophysics, meteorite analysis, and observational astronomy. The department is housed in the new Ho Science Center that is configured to facilitate interdisciplinary teaching and research. Russian and Eurasian Studies (1-year position)

The Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies at Colgate University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning fall semester 2013. We seek a dynamic scholar with an interest in teaching language, literature, and area studies courses in an interdisciplinary environment. The successful candidate will teach second-year Russian and a variety of literature and culture courses. A strong background in the revolutionary period and the twenty-first century is desired.  An ability to teach a course with a focus on Central Asia or the Caucasus would be a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, either through “Communities and Identities” course, or by joining the faculty of “Challenges of Modernity” or “Legacies of the Ancient World.” Minimum qualifications are a PhD or ABD in an appropriate field.
