Pre-Law Advising

Each year, many students and alumni consider pursuing the study of law. The process of applying to schools that are approved by the American Bar Association is competitive nationwide. Students interested in exploring a career in law are encouraged to register with the pre-law adviser well in advance of their senior year.

Career Counseling

Students and alumni may schedule individual appointments with the pre-law adviser by stopping by the Center for Career Services or calling 315-228-7380.The adviser is available to counsel students regarding a potential career in law and the law school application process, either upon graduation or in subsequent years.

Pre-law Advice

The adviser provides information to students regarding undergraduate preparation. Significant emphasis is placed on the major criteria considered by competitive law schools in order to maximize the potential of each candidate.

Recommended Timeline

Discovering law as a career can begin as early as your first year of college. The application process should begin during your junior year or in the year prior to your anticipated attendance at law school. Here is a suggested timeline. (PDF)

Admission Guidance

The adviser assists students during every phase of the application process. These services include: creating individual timelines; accessing relevant information and documentation to facilitate wise decisions; advising with regard to sufficient LSAT preparation; critiquing essays; reviewing applications; and choosing schools for submission of applications and matriculation.

In addition to individual advisement meetings, the adviser conducts group and panel discussions and workshops. Reference materials, catalogues, research and career-related reports, articles, and task-oriented handouts are available to students.

Law School Fair

The annual Law School Fair brings more than 70 law school representatives to campus to distribute literature, answer questions, and provide information to individuals.
