Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Learning Management Systems (LMS), like Colgate’s current Moodle and former Blackboard systems, have been at the center of online course presence for many years. They provide many useful services for the conduct and support teaching and learning, but not always in a form which is appreciated or as easy to use as alternatives. 
The LMS is not likely to disappear in the face of free and simpler alternatives; it has certain advantages of familiarity and consistency (for professors and students), it provides a relatively full toolbox of resources, and it provides the access control and privacy necessary for copyright compliance and uninhibited discussion. Still there are many reasons to venture beyond the bounds of the LMS for much (or all) of a course's online presence.
