Engagement and Support

The Engagement and Support team has several functions. The service desk supports technology related incidents and addresses and routes service requests. Our installations team inventories and manages Colgate's computer assets.

Ahmad joined Colgate University Summer of 2001. He was a member of the Cheerleading team while a student and then was the assistant coach for few years. He worked for the IT department as a student and continued on as a staff member after graduation. He has held several positions in the department leading up to his current role. 

Ahmad volunteers with the Hamilton Fire Department and enjoys outdoor activities regardless of the season.

Jon has been a member of the Service Desk team since 2008, working with the Colgate community to ensure that their technology problems are fixed and requests for services are filled.  Jon is the current leader for the IT Customer Service Action Team and enjoys being at Colgate because of all the great people he gets to work with each day.

Jon and his wife are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters.  Together they enjoy gardening, biking, hiking, camping and just about anything else you can do outdoors

I joined Colgate in October 2005. I currently am one of six IT Support Specialists.  I grew up in North Brookfield and moved to the metropolis of Waterville, NY after obtaining my Telecommunications and Computer Science degrees.  I received my first big break when I was recruited to a newly formed LLC named Network Data Systems. NDS was created by Faxton/St. Lukes Hospitals; now called Mohawk Valley Health System, to merge Faxton and St. Lukes data centers into one healthcare system.  I worked there for 12 years before joining the staff here at Colgate.

I love the outdoors especially fishing and hiking.  I can usually be found by one of the lakes in the area at lunch hour trying to outsmart a bass. I won't tell you who is getting the best of the other.  If you want to learn how to fish or would like to join me, let me know.  It is usually more fun with a friend.

Laura first joined Colgate’s IT department in 2007, and enjoys collaborating with faculty and staff to explore creative, sustainable technology solutions.  She engages with cross-functional and cohesive teams on various technology projects, analyzes needs, and maintains operational knowledge of current systems and emerging computing technologies to meet the support demands of the campus community. 

In her free time, Laura loves the relaxing lake life, kayaking, biking, and spending time with her fiancé and family.

Derrick Ottman

Derrick came to Colgate in March of 2013 as a Technology Services Analyst. He currently (April 2017) is moving into a newly created  IT Support Specialist role. Derrick has been working in the IT field for about 17 years now.  He has a BA in International Studies from Brockport College, and was fortunate enough to once have studied in Heidelberg, Germany.

Derrick resides in the Syracuse area, and has two children in college now. He enjoys working in the higher education atmosphere. Outside of work Derrick loves films, travel, philosophy (Eastern and Western), hiking, tapas and stand up comedy. He is an avid reader, always having multiple books in progress, along with a wait list for what is next.

Joel joined Colgate in December of 2015. Joel and his wife moved to Central NY in September from the Hartford CT area, but his upbringing was in the Boston area and his undergraduate degree is from Boston University.

Joel has worked in information technology at Raytheon, Boston College, US Coast Guard Academy and at the Connecticut Humane Society.

Joel's hobbies include travel, music, reading and following the Boston sports teams.

Jordan joined Colgate's IT staff part-time in the summer of 2015. As of spring 2017, he is working as a full-time IT Support Specialist. During his time so far, Jordan has covered the help desk, supported imaging/managing classroom equipment, and helped with installations. He also works on packaging and deploying applications and packages for both Mac and Windows machines. As the youngest member of the Engagement and Support team, he looks forward to learning and growing both as an individual and professional.

In his free time, Jordan enjoys reading, sports, movies, and competitive gaming.

Here is a little history on myself. I am a local product of Sherburne, graduating from S-E in 1974. After working in dead end jobs, I decided to enter the USAF for four years. It was a very worthwhile experience, but I wanted to cross train out of the career field that I was in, but did not. So, after separating from the service with a young baby in tow, I went to SUNY Morrisville and received my degree in Electronics Technology. Working several part time jobs and after graduation, Kodak recruited me and off to Rochester we went. Spending three years there and wanting to come home, with another young child. Colgate had an opening for a Data Communications technician. So, I accepted that position and have been here for 32 years and am currently the Lead Technology Delivery Specialist

Patrick Fagan has been an Installations Specialist at Colgate University since 2007. He attended SUNY Morrisville and worked at the Joyce & Holbrook Law Firm for 5 years before joining Colgate ITS. In his free time Patrick works on developing a small home based computer repair service.

Bill Miller

Bill Miller

 Lead Hardware Specialist

Bill started at Colgate in early 2002.  A hardware mechanic to the core, he studied automotive technology in high school and college, then branched off into office machine repair early in his working career.  He was hired at Colgate to perform repairs on computers and printers.  He earned Apple warranty repair certification in 2004 and helped set up Colgate as an Apple Authorized Service Provider.  He earned HP certification in 2014.  Today he also helps with print server management and PaperCut administration.

Outside of work Bill enjoys computer and table-top gaming, visiting with friends and family, and sunny day drives with his wife in their convertible.
