Crime Prevention Tips

General Safety

  • Lock your room.
  • Do not prop open your door.
  • Do not share door codes with anyone; vendors or food delivery personnel.
  • Secure your valuables. 
  • Lock your vehicle; keep valuables out of sight.
  • Do not keep large sums of money or expensive jewelry in your room.
  • Record serial numbers and model numbers of your valuables.
  • Always report a crime to the campus safety or Hamilton Police Department.
  • Always report suspicious persons or incidents to campus safety.
  • Lock all doors at all times, interior and exterior.

Personal Safety Tips

  • Never walk alone; walk with others or request an escort.
  • Walk on commonly traveled, well-lit paths and sidewalks
  • Never volunteer personal information to strangers.
  • Do not solicit rides; utilize public transportation systems.
  • Use the buddy system when going out.
  • Do not leave your friends alone at parties or bars.
  • Don't leave a party with someone you just met.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be sure to have blinds and curtains on your windows to protect your privacy.

Date Rape Prevention

  • Watch your drink being poured, and do not leave it unattended.
  • Get your own drink.
  • Do not drink from an open container, like a punch bowl.
  • Do not drink anything that has an unusual taste, especially salty.
  • Do not share drinks.
  • Know what you want sexually; set limits; communicate this to others.
  • Be forceful, firm, and assertive.
  • Be aware of non-verbal clues that can alert you to a problem.
  • Don't lose control; drugs and alcohol can alter your judgment.
  • Remove yourself from a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable.
  • Avoid secluded places at the beginning of relationships.
