Research Interests

Since 2008, research efforts in the Chianese group have centered on discovering new pincer-iridium catalysts for C-H functionalization reactions. We have developed the synthesis of CCC-pincer bis-carbene ligands with bulky, aromatic sidegroups, and their metalation to give acetonitrile-solvated hydridochloride iridium complexes. Structures determined by X-ray crystallography are shown below.

Upon treatment with a strong base to promote the reductive elimination of HCl, these CCC-pincer iridium complexes form active catalysts for arene C-H borylation and alkane dehydrogenation. Synthesis, metalation, and preliminary catalytic results have recently been published:
