Green Events  

Follow these guidelines for making your next event a green one!
Buying local positively impacts your community and reduces the environmental impact of your event.

Food and Dining

  • Provide organic/local food when possible 
  • Serve smaller portions (allowing people to come back for more, instead of taking too much the first time)
  • Provide plates, cups, and utensils made from recycled material and/or that are biodegradable (avoid Styrofoam)
  • Provide napkins made from 100 percent post-consumer content
  • Encourage the use of reusable mugs or water bottles (no bottled water) 
  • Compost food waste (when possible)


  • Provide carpooling options (encourage rideshare program)
  • Encourage use of Colgate Cruiser for on-campus travel
  • Encourage participation in voluntary offset of carbon emissions (i.e.,


  • Send event invitations through e-mail 
  • Print programs on recycled paper 
  • Utilize environmental-friendly marketing on recycled paper or e-mail
  • Make sure that there are clearly labeled recycling bins present 
  • Optimize natural lighting (open blinds or look for rooms that have good natural lighting)
