Consultant Profiles Faculty Resources

The Writing Center accepts applications each spring for positions to begin the following academic year. Applications for work to begin fall 2010 are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010.

In addition to demonstrating strong writing skills, the successful applicant will be personable, reliable, and able to help others learn. Consultants should also be motivated learners themselves, as they will participate in ongoing training as they work one-on-one with their peers.

  • No prior tutoring experience is necessary.
  • First-year students are especially encouraged to apply.
  • You are eligible even if you plan to study abroad for a semester.
  • You must be available to work at least 5 regular hours per week.
  • You must be available to work some evenings.
  • You can be from any major.
  • Pay begins at approximately $9/hr and increases slightly each year.
  • The application deadline is strict; late applications will NOT be accepted.
  • Required application materials

Make sure your name appears on each of the following documents. Please do not staple any pages together. Packets should include:

  • A completed application cover sheet, available here (PDF) or in 212 Alumni Hall.
  • A résumé. Career Services can provide excellent assistance, including instruction, models, and other resources for creating a professional résumé.
  • A statement of interest. This is the most important document in your application and should be an essay of no more than 2 single-spaced pages explaining why you want to become a writing consultant and describing the skills you would bring to the position. We look for statements that are well-written and give us a sense of your motivation, personality, and interests.
  • An academic transcript from Colgate. An unofficial transcript is fine.
  • Two writing samples. These should be copies of academic papers you have submitted for two different college courses. Both essays should demonstrate your analytic writing skills; please do not submit fiction or poetry. Each paper should be no shorter than 2 pages and no longer than 15. For each, please attach a cover sheet on which you quote the original prompt or briefly describe the assignment. If you have any concerns or questions about this requirement, please contact the Writing Center Director.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Do not e-mail your application materials. Instead, address your sealed application packet to Jenn Lutman, Director, Colgate University Writing Center, and deliver it to 216 Alumni Hall on or before 5:00pm on Friday, March 12, 2010. If you have questions, e-mail or call Ms. Lutman at (315) 228-7376.
