Educational studies is a small exciting department committed to the pursuit of greater social equity and justice, offering undergraduate programs as well as an M.A.T. graduate program. We offer both critical study of education as a social science discipline and teacher education programs.
Students who work with us in either capacity will critically examine not only the experience of schooling, but also the process by which all social institutions, the media, and cultural groups influence what counts as knowledge and determine what and how such knowledge is transmitted.
The study of education as a social science discipline within our liberal arts context may lead to a major or a minor in educational studies. Students with majors in Educational Studies have embarked on careers in education policy, finance, and graduate studies in the social sciences. The study of education for teacher preparation leads to New York State certification as a childhood/elementary or adolescence/secondary school teacher.
Please note, then, that at Colgate, majoring in education and preparing to become a teacher require two different, but sometimes overlapping courses of study. Use these webpages to learn more about the opportunities that best fit your goals, and feel free to come and see us for support in determining your path.
