About the Workshop
The Young Writers’ Workshop is an intensive, non-residential workshop for middle and high school students, grades 6 -11, who have a passion for writing. The workshop provides, for five full days, a stimulating and supportive environment in which young writers think, imagine, and discover new ideas through the act of writing, and share those ideas with other talented writers with similar interests.
Young writers work closely with certified teachers and college mentors in classrooms set by grade level. Three visiting writers set the tone with readings and activities based on different genres; this year, the workshop will focus on poetry, fiction, and radio writing.
During the five days of the workshop, Young Writers participate in writing workshops and readings, as well as a variety of sports and recreational activities, which includes access to Colgate’s swimming pool and hiking trails.
We are excited to announce some changes to the YWW program. We are dividing the program such that 6th–8th graders will work with the visiting author in the morning and their classroom teachers and mentors in the afternoon, and 9th–11th graders will work with the author in the afternoon after starting pieces with their classroom teachers and mentors in the morning. We hope that this change will allow more structure, comfort, and overall writing time for the students.
The dates for this year’s workshop are August 5–9, with the last day being an optional half day. DETAILED SCHEDULE
