Nearly 800 people signed up to examine the works of four great authors through a free online course delivered through ColgateX.

The Course

Living Writers on ColgateX focused on esteemed authors Jonathan Franzen, Nadifa Mohamed, Marjane Satrapi, and Martin Amis. Use the links below to see what was offered in 2014.
Course details
This course will focus on four renowned international authors — Nadifa Mohamed (The Orchard of Lost Souls), Jonathan Franzen (Freedom), Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis), and Martin Amis (The Zone of Interest).

Start reading the novels listed above now in preparation for this fall when we launch an in-depth examination of the writers and their works. There will be regular podcasts, videotaped lectures, discussion forums, and real-time streaming of author events. And, enjoy a chance to interact with undergraduate students taking the Living Writers course on campus.

You can devote as much or as little time to this course as you like. Read one book, or two, or all four. We urge you to take full advantage of this course, which is co-taught by a literary scholar and a creative writer who bring to the table synergistic perspectives and a delight in the fun of the whole venture.

Faculty
Jane Pinchin
Jane Pinchin,Thomas A. Bartlett Professor in the Department of English, teaches courses in modern and contemporary fiction. Her publications include Alexandria Still: Forster, Durrell, and Cavafy (Princeton University Press, University of Cairo Press, and, in Spanish, Almed 2005). She is presently at work on a monograph on E.M.Forster and the Bloomsbury Group for Cecil Woolf Publishers. At Colgate, Jane has also served as provost and dean of faculty (1994-2001), interim president (2001-2002) and chair of the English department (2005-2013); at Bowdoin College she now serves as a trustee.

Jennifer Brice
An associate professor of English at Colgate, Jennifer Brice is a writer and teacher of creative nonfiction. Her first book, The Last Settlers, is a work of documentary journalism, and her second, Unlearning to Fly, is a memoir-in-essays. Her essays have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including The Dolphin Reader, The Gettysburg Review, River Teeth, and American Nature Writing. A regular member of the Colgate Writers’ Conference faculty, she is at work on a collection of essays about being in love with the material world.
Jonathan Franzen On Campus
Participants are invited to meet Jonathan Franzen, author of Freedom, during a special on-campus event October 23. More details to come about this Family Weekend event.
