The Importance of Internships

Internships have become an essential component of higher education and a valuable prerequisite to post-graduate success. They serve as important tools in career explorations and skills development that help Colgate students translate their liberal arts education into rewarding professional paths.

Meeting a Need

Although generous, Colgate’s existing funds are insufficient to meet the full financial needs of students who pursue unpaid or underpaid internships. Students face significant financial barriers to securing internships if they are unable to forego summer wages or to live in a distant city where the internships are offered.
During the spring of 2015, 442 students petitioned Colgate for internship support. With limited funds, the institution was able to support only 211 students. We anticipate that student requests for internship support will continue to grow rapidly — a need that the Center for Career Services will be unable to meet without your help.

A Challenge for Parents and Families

Colgate is pleased to announce Nic Loiacono P’16 has agreed to serve as the parent advisor to the committee and will assist by encouraging parents and families to support the initiative. He has decided to challenge the parent and family community by pledging to match all gifts towards the effort 1:1, up to $25,000. We hope that our parent community will rise to the occasion and participate in the challenge.

Keep in mind that one of Colgate’s goals this year is to develop a culture of philanthropy on campus by encouraging students to make their own gifts. To support this objective, the student Presidents’ Club membership was lowered to $13. Please allow your student to make a gift.

Thanks in advance for your support! For questions about the challenge, please contact:

“It is critically important for Colgate to ensure career success for students, which is why I have pledged up to $25,000 towards the senior class gift — the Class of 2016 Endowed Internship Fund. I encourage other parents to join me.”
