Colgate Fund Scholarship Program

In 2006, Colgate launched a unique gift option for leadership donors to the Unrestricted Annual Fund with exciting stewardship opportunities.

With a commitment of $5,000 or more, a Colgate Fund Scholarship donor will learn about the transformative impact of financial aid from a current Colgate student.

Financial Aid at Colgate

In our changed economic environment, access to higher education will become increasingly difficult for students and their families. Colleges and universities who are able to provide increasing levels of financial assistance to qualified students will thrive while schools less able to allocate additional resources to financial aid may be left behind.

Given this scenario, Colgate leadership has designated financial aid as our highest priority. The goal is to make a Colgate education accessible to all students who are capable of, and interested in, the intense level of engagement that Colgate offers, regardless of that applicant’s aid status. Within this overarching goal, the institution has identified three specific areas of opportunity that increased funding for financial aid will address: elevating the academic profile of the institution, increasing socio-economic diversity on campus, and strengthening Colgate’s competitive position in the future. This graph highlights the importance of financial aid.

Colgate Fund Scholarships support Colgate’s top priority of financial aid by providing grant funding for our financial aid awards and thereby easing the loan burden on our students. It is also important to note that the full amount of an Colgate Fund Scholarship supports current students in the fiscal year in which it is given. The scholarship, therefore, is a gift of immediate impact and provides Colgate great flexibility in fulfilling its commitment to meet the demonstrated financial need of deserving students.

Below are a few of the many students who have benefitted from financial aid and generous donors who have supported the program.

Jessica Nuthmann ’17
Hometown: Amherst, Massachusetts
Concentration: English, Educational Studies

“Colgate has given me more than I imagined when I matriculated a year and a half ago. I have been challenged by both professors and peers to think critically about the world in which we live. I never imagined developing the perspectives that I have. Your generosity means that I am able to continue my education at this prestigious institution, where I have grown as a student and as a person.”
Zachary Weaver, Colgate Fund scholarship recipient
Zachary Weaver ’17
Hometown: Auburn, New York
Concentration: Astronomy & Physics

“It truly touches me that there are alumni who are excited about my education and are endorsing me to continue. I am majoring in physics, but I am also studying astronomy, which is my passion. I split my time on campus between my job at the Ho Tung Visualization Laboratory and helping Professor Karen Harpp run an online course on EdX. I was recently accepted to the Wales Study Abroad program. I wish to sincerely thank you for helping me through Colgate.”
Adrienne Davidovich, Colgate Fund scholarship recipient
Adrienne Davidovich ’17
Hometown: Lake View, New York
Concentration: Sociology, Women’s Studies

“These past two years have been the happiest and most rewarding of my life. I have met incredible people from all over the world, learned another language, and involved myself in fulfilling activities. My extracurriculars include the Colgate University Orchestra, ballroom club, and Delta Delta Delta sorority. I have found a home, and I know how incredibly lucky I am to be here. None of this would be possible at any institution other than Colgate, and Colgate would not be possible for me without your support.”
Thylo Phant, Colgate Fund scholarship recipient
Thylo Phant ’16
Hometown: Yangon, Myanmar
Concentration: Economics

“I am an international student from Yangon, a commercial capital of Myanmar. My father is an orthopedic surgeon in Yangon and my mother is a house maker. As I come from a middle-income family in a developing country, a quality Colgate education would not be affordable without your support. I chose Colgate University for the scholarship opportunities it provides and its strong emphasis on academics. Undoubtedly, Colgate has given me opportunities to develop myself intellectually and grow as a person. I am truly grateful for the assistance I am receiving. Your support motivates me to work harder towards my educational and career goals.”
