Scholarships for Semester Study
• Application deadlines for the Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan (www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj/Bridging/scholarships.html) are the first week of October for studying during the spring semester and the first week of April for studying during the fall semester. (Please check the website for exact deadline dates.) Undergrads majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a U.S. college before and during the time they are studying abroad. Recipients receive up to $2,500 for a semester-long program.
• The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (for semester programs) (www.iie.org/gilman) deadlines are the first week of October for studying during the spring semester and the first week of March for studying in the fall semester. (Please check Gilman website for exact deadline dates.) The Gilman Program is seeking applicants who are U.S. citizens and recipients of a Pell grant. Students who have traditionally been underrepresented in education abroad are preferred. The Gilman Scholarship Program offers up to $5,000 per semester to recipients. Students who are studying a critical need language (such as Chinese, Russian, and Arabic) are eligible to receive a $3,000 supplement.
• The goal of the Freeman Asia Awards (www.iie.org/freeman-asia) is to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia. Awards range from up to $5,000 for semester study. Some of the eligible destinations include China, Japan, and Korea. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, financial need, and limited experience in the proposed country of study. Application deadline for fall semester is April 1; spring semester deadline is October 15. Please make an appointment with Off-Campus Study in 101 Lathrop before applying.
• The Fund for Education Abroad awards (http://www.fundforeducationabroad.com) are intended to support students in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs. FEA awards up to ten scholarships each year; the amount of the award for a semester program is up to $5,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled in a U.S. university or college. Application deadlines are due in early November to study during the following academic year. Because the deadline date is so far in advance of the actual study semester, it is not necessary for applicants to have applied or been accepted to a study abroad program.
• Rainbow Scholarship - LGBT students who are applying for a scholarship through the Fund for Education Abroad (http://www.fundforeducationabroad.com) (see above) may also choose to be considered for this award. FEA offers one scholarship per year to an LGBT student to take part in a high-quality, rigorous study abroad program. The amount of the award for a semester program is up to $5,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled in a U.S. university or college. Application deadlines are due in early November to study during the following academic year or summer. Because the deadline date is so far in advance of the actual study semester, it is not necessary for applicants to have applied or been accepted to a study abroad program.
• The NSEP Boren Scholarship Program (www.borenawards.org) offers scholarships for fall and spring semesters. The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who wish to study outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Language study must be a component of the study abroad program. The maximum award is $10,000 for a semester program. The campus deadline for contacting the Off-Campus Study Office regarding your intent to apply is the first Friday in December. Please meet with an advisor at Off-Campus Study in 101 Lathrop Hall before beginning the on-line application.
• The RIT Merit Scholarship program offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships for $2,500 to highly qualified candidates from U.S. universities to study at the Rothenberg International School (RIT) at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. To be considered, candidates must have completed three semesters of university study and have a minimum GPA of 3.8. The deadline for the fall semester is mid-April; spring semester deadline is mid-November. See website for exact dates and most updated information. • The Louis Levine Scholarship offers $2,500 for one semester of study at the Rothenberg International School at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. To be considered, candidates must have completed three semesters of university study and have a minimum GPA of 3.8. Scholarships for Summer Study
• The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (www.iie.org/gilman) offers scholarships of up to $5,000 for summer study. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and Pell grant recipients. Application deadline for summer study is early March. Please check website for exact deadline dates.

• The United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) (www.clscholarship.org) offer overseas scholarships for intensive summer language institutes in eleven critical languages (Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu). The application deadline each year is in early November. (Check website for exact deadline date.)
• The Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages (www.middlebury.edu/ls/finaid/fellowships/kwd) The Davis Fellowships cover the full cost (tuition, room, and board) of summer language study from beginner to graduate levels in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian at the Middlebury College Language Schools. The Davis Fellowships are merit-based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution. Individuals in other fields are also encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the critical languages listed above. Check website for eligibility requirements. Application deadline is February 1.
