Students who are studying abroad in the Fall of 2016 but participated in the chorus in the Spring of 2016 are still eligible. Admittance to the Colgate University Chorus is by audition (see below). Students may elect, but are not required, to take MUSI-234 or -334 for credit during the 2016-17 academic year.

Overview:

One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of studying and performing music is understanding its historical and cultural context, particularly that of music composed several hundred years ago or thousands of miles away. This extended study offers an opportunity to gain deeper understanding of the historical and cultural context of the course subject material (the music of Latin America) primarily through rehearsals and performances in the regions where the composers lived and worked. Students become deeply and intimately engaged in the repertoire by performing it numerous times and continually refining their work for varied performance venues. Additionally, students will participate in lectures and excursions to historical/cultural sites to further connect the music being performed to the region.

In addition to further building upon the students’ knowledge and performance ability of Colombian and Latin American music, this extended study will help dispel some of the cultural myths that have plagued Colombia for decades. Students will research and gain insight into the history, culture, politics, and religion of the region. Additionally, cultural exchanges between Colgate University students and the people of Colombia will serve as one small step toward fostering understanding between the two countries.

Auditioning for the University Chorus:

Students interested in participating in this concert tour to Colombia must audition for the University Chorus. Auditions will be held starting Wednesday, August 26, 2016. Students should email Dr. Endris at rendris@colgate.edu to schedule their audition time. More information about the University Chorus and the audition process is available at www.colgate.edu/choral.
