This course addresses issues of Israeli history, culture, and religion. Combining study and travel is a well-tested way of deepening knowledge of another culture. The combination of classroom learning at Colgate and travel on site in Israel makes for a powerful educational experience. Given the dry climate of Israel, much has been preserved from the past.
There are stunning archeological and natural sites that today still reveal the presence of Jews, Christians, and Arabs dating back to ancient times.
Students will not only see ancient sites like Qumran, Masada, Tzipori and The Western Wall, but will have the opportunity to meet Israelis and Palestinian Arabs to hear different views of the Arab-Israeli conflict as well as speakers from academia and government who will present different perspectives on Israel as a modern democratic nation-state.
