Seneca Falls

Every year the Women’s Studies Program organizes a daylong trip to Seneca Falls and Auburn, N.Y., in commemoration of the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, the first women’s rights convention held in the United States.  Participants visit the Women’s Rights National Historic Park and the homes of Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and William Seward.

Tubman was a well-known abolitionist and women’s rights activist.  Stanton was one of the five organizers of the women’s rights convention as well as co-author of both The Declaration of the Rights of Women and The Woman’s Bible. Seward was a senator and governor of New York who was supportive of both the abolitionist and women’s rights movements.

This trip is both an informative and inspiring way to learn about women’s rights leaders who substantially influenced women’s place in society today.  Made possible by Colgate’s unique location near a hotspot of activism, the trip pays homage to the fascinating history of Upstate New York in the context of the women’s rights movement.

This year's trip will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 7:30am-6:30pm.  Please email Kimmie Garner at kgarner@colgate.edu for more details or if you would like to reserve a space on this special field trip.
