General Collections and Search Engines

  • Ancient World Web: This is a great collection of sites, indexed and easily searchable, most with handy descriptions so that you can get a sense of whether you want to bother with any particular link.
  • Perseus: One of the most extensive Classics sites on the Web today. This is a rich resource for texts, images, archaeological remains and site plans. Originally focused on Greek culture, it now has a companion site called Roman Perseus which is currently under construction.

Topic Specific Sites 

  • Women in Antiquity: Diotima: Extensive collection of bibliographies primarily focussing on women in antiquity
  • The Vergil Project: Argos is an Effective Selective Search Engine for Ancient and Medieval Sites and Sources. This automatically filters out irrelevant info (e.g., computer programs named ‘Plato’)
  • Near East: ABZU: ABZU is a guide to resources on Near East available on the net. It has links to maps, atlases, archaeological sites, museum collections, collections of texts (in original languages as well as in translation) etc.
  • Ancient Roman Recipes: Explains what Roman food substances not common today were, and how to duplicate them for some of these recipes. For those interested in learning more about ancient feasts this site will be useful.

Dictionaries and Reference Works

  • Rhetorical Figures: Very useful for students. It explains and gives examples of ancient rhetorical figures (63 in all, with links to similar sites).
  • Perseus Project Greek Dictionaries : This allows free access to online versions of the Intermediate Liddell and Scott, as well as the larger Liddell-Scott-Jones (9th ed.). These virtual dictionaries can be used while reading texts contained in Perseus archive.
  • Suda: An ongoing collaborative project to create an online translation of the Suda, a 10th century Byzantine Greek encyclopedia which is a rich resource of information about the ancient world. They are looking for volunteers to translate entries!

Papyrii and Manuscripts

  • Philodemus Project: This site has great photos of papyrus fragments
  • Dead Sea Scrolls: Library of Congress online version of the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition; has images of scroll fragments among other items.
  • Duke University’s Papyrology Site: Extensive and well-organized site. There are general papyrology links, extensive information, more than 200 images. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Archaeological Remains and Virtual Tours

  • ROMARCH: Amazing collection of links and information about Roman archeology ranging from ca. 1000 BCE to 600 CE.
  • Pictures of Athens: This is a photographic archive of archaeological and architectural remains of Athens. These can be downloaded and used in classes without copyright infringement.
  • Pompeii Forum Project: Using image-maps, it breaks down the Forum area into component buildings and functions.
