Salve!
Welcome to the study of the Classics at Colgate University. The department offers a wide range of courses that cover every aspect of the Greco-Roman world. Whether it be classical mythology, Greek art, women in antiquity, tragedy, epic poetry, archeology, philosophy, religion, politics, history, or language, the department offers courses that attract students of all backgrounds and interests.
First year students may explore the discipline by taking introductory courses in either Latin or Greek. Students with a background in the Classics may elect to take higher level courses. After only a year of instruction in either language the student will be able to dive into the original texts of ancient authors such as Plato and Cicero.
The department also provides students the opportunity to study on site in either Greece or Italy for a three week extended study at the conclusion of the spring semester.
Recent graduates from the department are pursing careers in law, medicine, advertising, computer science, education, and of course, graduate work in the classics.
