Dijon Study Group

Spring Term--Annual

Each year the Department of Romance Languages conducts a study group at the University of Burgundy in Dijon where students live with host families. The month of January is devoted to intensive language study and cultural orientation.

The curriculum includes advanced courses in literature, language and contemporary civilizations as well as electives. Field trips are organized to important cultural and historical sites in Paris, the Loire Valley and Provence.

This program is open to juniors, and occasionally seniors, who possess sufficient language competence and maturity to participate. Prerequisites are FREN 301 and a 400-level literature course.

The study group experience is an integral part of the French and Spanish programs, and all qualified majors are expected to participate. Preference is given to majors and minors , but other qualified are also encouraged to apply.

The department has established the following policies for the Dijon study group: students must register for a full load of courses; students may not take a fifth course; all courses must be taken for a standard letter grade. Only in unusual circumstances will the department chair grant exceptions.

Madrid Study Group

Fall Term

Colgate sponsors a one semester program at the University of San Pablo CEU in Madrid, Spain. The Spain Study Group operates in Santiago de Compostelo and Madrid (August and fall semester) . Students live with host families in Madrid.

Courses are chosen from a curriculum that includes Spanish language, literature, art, history, sociology/anthropology and political science. Students will be able to elect one or two courses from those offered by the University of San Pablo CEU.

In order to be eligible for the August and fall semester program, a student must successfully complete at least one 350-level survey and SPAN 361 or 362. Qualified non-majors are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to those pursuing a major or minor in Spanish

Venice Study Group
Fall Term--Annual
This study group, affiliated with the University of Venice, is intended for students who have demonstrated an academic interest in one or more of the following areas: classical studies and archaelogy, Italian languages and literature, art history, music, and medieval and Renaissance history.

Courses are staffed by the Colgate director and by Italian specialists. Three courses are normally offered each year: Italian Language (Three Levels), Archaeology of Italy, and The Arts of Venice during the Golden Age. A fourth course could be the specialty of the director or a special classics offering.

There are field trips to important archaeological sites and museums in such places as Rome and the Veneto. The rich artistic resources of Venice are also used to supplement class work. Knowledge of elementary Italian (studied at high school, at Colgate or in an Italian summer program) is required.
