The Health Care Reform Debate:
Undergraduate Voices

RELIGION 264

Undergraduate Voices is a podcast project by students in Professor Suzanne Holland's bioethics course in fall 2009.  The podcasts represent the research and thinking of undergraduates studying bioethics at the height of the debates about how to reform the American health care system.  While nearly everyone, it seems, has been asked to weigh in on what to do about health care reform — from tea party participants to pundits and politicians — no one seems to have asked college students for their opinions.

These podcasts represent the best thinking from teams of students on issues they care about — issues they think you ought to care about, too, as we try and figure out, collectively, how best to cover the great mosaic of people, and the great mosaic of problems, that make up these United States.  We invite you to listen, to reflect, and perhaps even to take action if you are so moved.

Suzanne Holland was the NEH Endowed Chair in Religion during fall 2009 at Colgate (sholland@colgate.edu). She is the Philip M. Phibbs Research Professor & Professor of Ethics at the University of Puget Sound (sholland@pugetsound.edu).

Episode 7: Abortion: A Universal Right

Hannah Dashefsky '11 and Carly Cox '13

This podcast explores how the federal government's new universal health care plan treats abortions. Specifically it analyzes the Stupak-Pitts amendment, a recently added bill that prohibits anyone who gets federal insurance premium subsidies from purchasing private policies that cover abortions and permanently eliminates elected abortion coverage from the public option. The authors of this podcast share their opinion that the Stupak-Pitts amendment will put poorer women at a significant disadvantage in terms of being able to obtain abortions. Instead the authors believe that the universal health care plan should provide everyone with an equal opportunity to access whatever health services they need.
