Department of Philosophy

Philosophy deals with some of the most fundamental questions about the nature of reality and our place within it: What makes an action morally right or wrong? What is free will, and do we have any? What is the nature of knowledge? What is the relation between the mind and the body? What makes a political system just? Does God exist?

With more than a dozen faculty and over 100 majors, philosophy has traditionally been one of the strongest disciplines at Colgate. Because of our size, we are able to offer a wide range of courses that cover the whole breadth of the discipline. Some of our courses are focused on subfields of philosophy whereas others concentrate on particular periods in the history of philosophy.

To find out more about our course offerings, please use the links on the left and right. A good place to start your exploration of philosophy is with one of our introductory courses, such as Introduction to Philosophical Problems (PHIL201) or Ethics (PHIL213).
