Welcome to the International Relations Program
For those interested in world affairs, Colgate offers a major in international relations (IR).
The IR program co-sponsors a study group in Geneva, Switzerland, that allows a small group of students, most of whom are majoring in political science or international relations, to explore contemporary international organizations; European politics, life, culture, history, and thought; and the history and development of international law and courts.
The program also offers several three-to-five week extended study opportunities, such as the National Security Extended Study in New York City, where students meet with diplomats from countries involved in major conflicts around the world, news producers from various media outlets, and with representatives of non-governmental organizations. The trip includes visits to the US Army War College and West Point. Students interested in the European Union attend the annual “Eurosim,” which alternates between sites in North America and Europe.
Colgate also offers a minor program in international relations. For both the major and minor, reading proficiency in a foreign language is required.
