Off-Campus Research

Colgate geology students taking part in the off-campus field work trip, the "OC"The "OC"

The geology department hosts a field program that is a fundamental part of its curriculum. Students are engaged in five weeks of intensive field study in locations across the United States on a program that has been developed and refined over several decades.

On the trip, students develop basic field skills essential for a professional geologist, as well as an understanding of the geologic history of various regions of the United States.

Though they change from year to year, field locations may include the Front Range, Rocky Mountains, Colorado National Monument, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Parks, among others.

Australia, Wales, and England Study Groups

Colgate's off-campus study program features the following semester-long programs that are specifically designed with students of the sciences in mind:

  • University of Wollongong, in Australia
  • Cardiff University, Wales
  • University of Manchester, England
See the off-campus study office for more details.

Sea Semester and Maritime Studies Program

Other off-campus learning opportunities include the department's affiliation with the Sea Semester program at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. Students may also participate in the Maritime Studies Program at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut.

Collaborative research and the Keck Consortium

Students who engage in collaborative research with a faculty member or through the Keck Consortium may also conduct research off-campus, depending on the nature of the research.
