Colgate's geology department is recognized as having one of the best undergraduate geology programs in the nation. The department vigorously supports student research and promotes active participation of faculty and students in off-campus study groups.

Because of the diverse nature of the discipline, the geology department offers two majors, geology and environmental geology. These majors are designed to enhance a student's understanding of our planet and to help them pursue careers in science, education, environmental consulting, business, law, and natural resource-related fields.
