The Young Writers' Workshop is a one-week workshop for creative and motivated Central New York students preparing to enter grades 6-10. Our goal is to provide students with a stimulating and supportive environment in which young writers may think, imagine, and discover new ideas through the act of writing.
Four workshop groups of up to 12 students each will meet for 6 hours per day (including time for lunch and recreation). Participants will be grouped by age. Young writers will work closely with published writers and poets, certified teachers, and undergraduate mentors. Please note that Young Writers' is not an overnight, residential camp.
Each day will be devoted to one genre of writing (e.g. poetry, short story, personal essay, journalism, or non-fiction), with the final day set aside for revision and readings by workshop participants.
A certified language arts teacher will lead each workshop with assistance from trained undergraduate writing mentors. YWW is intended to serve as an enrichment program, rather than a remedial one. Workshop participants will return to their classrooms in the fall with enhanced skills and confidence in their writing.
The 2011 session of Young Writers Workshop will be held from Aug. 8-12.
Register by June 1, 2011 to pay last year's tuition of $195, or by August 1, 2011 to pay tuition of $215. Click "Application" below to complete the first steps online, or e-mail youngwriters@colgate.edu for more information.
