Student Research

Academic Year Research

All chemistry and biochemistry majors are required to participate in a full year of original research during their senior year, in collaboration with one or more faculty members.

Typically, students join an ongoing research project in the department. Please visit the faculty page to get detailed descriptions of ongoing projects.

Summer Research

The deadline for application is mid-April 2010. Applicants should contact faculty members in whose research they are interested as early as possible to assure the best chance of receiving an award.

The department sponsors an active summer research program each year. Typically, 10-20 students participate in summer research in chemistry and biochemistry each year, and are a part of a larger community of as many as 100 students on campus during the summer, each conducting original research in the arts and sciences.

Appointments are normally for 10 full weeks, beginning the first week in June, but other arrangements may be negotiated on an individual basis. For summer 2009, the stipend is $400 per week. Subsidized on-campus summer housing is available.

Students interested in summer research opportunities in chemistry or biochemistry at Colgate have several fellowship programs from which to choose. Your potential faculty sponsor or the department chair, can help determine which program or programs are most appropriate for you.

Detailed descriptions of ongoing summer research projects are available at the faculty profile pages. All students who have completed one full year of chemistry are eligible.

Divisional Summer Research Fellowships (Colgate students only)

This program annually awards approximately 20-30 summer research fellowships in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Awards are made on the basis of a research proposal which is written under the supervision of one or more sponsoring faculty members. Applicants should contact faculty members in whose research they are interested as early as possible.

Please note the following important dates and deadlines:
  • Informational meeting: early February
  • Proposal writing workshop: early February
  • Deadline for applications: early March

Additional details, including downloadable application forms in MS-Word format, are available. If you cannot view the application forms, download Acrobat Reader. To obtain application materials in person, contact Jill Ford and mention the specific program in which you are interested.

Departmental Summer Research Fellowships

This program annually awards approximately 5 summer research fellowships each year from department funds, or from individual faculty research grants. Priority is given to Colgate students, but occasionally fellowships may be awarded to off-campus students.

All applicants to this program are strongly encouraged to contact individual faculty members in whose research they are interested regarding availability of funding and laboratory space.
