This studio art class is an introduction to the creative process, with a special emphasis on the multitude of ways that artists “tell the truth” about the world – how they observe, reflect, report and ultimately produce new versions of reality. Assignments will be primarily rooted in a range of digital media which could include video, audio, photography and/or web-based platforms. We will examine key aspects of visual thinking, brainstorming, creative problem solving, representation as interpretation, and critical method, which, in the spirit of the liberal arts, are highly relevant to any course of study. Throughout the semester, special lectures, gallery exhibitions, film screenings and readings will provide insight into the many ways that artists approach their work of “telling the truth.” While studio-based art projects will be our main focus, a series of short writing assignments and a substantial research project will also be integral to the course. Students who successfully complete this seminar will receive credit for ARTS 100 and satisfy one half of the Human Thought and Expression area of inquiry requirement.

Penny Lane is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and video artist who teaches in the Department of Art & Art History. Her recent films include JUST ADD WATER (2016), NUTS! (2016) and OUR NIXON (2013). She explores American history through archival film and creative reenactments, as well as intellectual debates about the ethical and epistemological claims of nonfiction.
