Jenn Carey '12
I am a senior double-majoring in economics and political science. While I love playing a game of Scrabble or patrolling for grammatical correctness (even in text messages), my favorite application of verbal skills is improving the conciseness and clarity of an analytical paper. When writing papers, I enjoy ensuring that each thought and quote contributes to a larger thesis. As a result, I love reading other students' papers as if they are a puzzle, questioning and confirming how each idea fits into and supports a main argument. So whether you are concerned that your thesis becomes lost in your paper or you are debating whether to use "who" or "whom," I'd love to lend a helping hand!

Emily Cozzi '12
I am a senior history major and sociology minor. I love to write and I love to help people with their writing, whether it’s creative, analytic, or anything else that comes my way. I particularly like working with people to develop clear, strong arguments for their papers.

Natalie Gaugh '12
I am a creative writing major and film and media studies minor. My experience with Speech & Debate has helped me appreciate the importance of writing as communication — in conversation, we want our ideas to be as clear as possible, and formal essays deserve the same consideration. In addition to enjoying both creative and analytic work, I love moose and dachshund, so feel free to chat with me about these furry creatures before or after a session!

I am a senior who has a major in political science and a minor in economics. As an international student who had studied English for as little as 5 years before coming to Colgate, I strongly believe that writing well is not an inborn gift but a craft that one can learn via practice. Yet another good news is that practice can be fun, too! I hope that I can share with you the excitement of developing an elegant argument and of finding just that right word.

I'm a senior sociology major. I love learning about new topics and ideas, so bring in whatever kind of paper you need help with: statistics, philosophy, environmental studies... anything! I have a tendency to ramble in papers; if you have this problem, too, I'd be happy to help you make your paper more concise!

Meg Peavey '12
I'm a senior double-majoring in Japanese and English and I love literary analysis papers, but I'm more than happy to help with anything from CORE essays to lab reports. I like to emphasize strong introductions and conclusions as well as clear and concise language. As a huge lover of languages, I'm interested in the quirky grammar rules and other oddities of English, so please come to me with questions!

I'm a senior peace and conflict studies major. My favorite part of writing is developing analytic arguments and ensuring that papers flow well.  I try to follow the maxim "write right, write tight," though it's certainly easier said than done. When I'm not in the writing and speaking center, I enjoy drinking espresso and reading The New Yorker.

I am a senior religion major and classics minor. In my time at Colgate, I've had the privilege of writing on a broad range of subjects in a variety of settings. Regardless the topic, my favorite part of the writing process is discovering where I stand in relation to my subject matter. I think this is probably the most important part of the writing process, as well as the real value to writing about the texts you read. Feel free to come visit no matter where you are in the writing process, but we can always help you more the earlier you come to talk about your writing.

I’m an international student and an English/computer science double major. I’m happy to discuss papers and I work best in a talkative, dialogue setting. I’m also capable of working with a variety of different topics, particularly with clients who are looking to sharpen their argument or articulate their points more clearly.

I am a junior double-majoring in peace and conflict studies and English, so I have a lot of experience with all kinds of papers, from research to analytical. I love working with PCON and English, but I also look forward to reading about new subjects! I think that brainstorming, outlines, and organization are the most important parts of any paper, and I love making sentences more fluid, argumentative, and generally prettier.  But who doesn't enjoy a good grammar session? Come by to work on anything you need!

I am a junior majoring in biology, with extensive experience writing both analytical short essays and research papers. In addition, I understand the format of lab reports for both chemistry and biology courses. My favorite part of the writing process is the organizational stage because that is when the paper develops a legitimate argument. I also like to keep my work both logical and concise, slashing away unnecessary information. I love to learn about new topics, so feel free to come to me with any kind of paper. Hope to see you soon!

I am a junior double-majoring in French and English with an emphasis in creative writing. Although I’ve had the most experience writing for the humanities due to my majors, I love working on papers from other disciplines, too, including analytical papers and research papers. I especially like to focus on clarity, organization, and argument, making sure that the structure of the paper presents the argument in the most straight-forward, meaningful way possible. Often when I’m having trouble with a paper, whether it's getting started or tying up the loose ends, I find the most helpful thing to do is to talk it over with someone. I'm eager to discuss papers at any point during the writing process!

I'm a junior majoring in international relations and minoring in film and media studies. I'm comfortable working with papers at any stage of the writing process, but would like to emphasize that I am all too familiar with that anxiety-ridden, beginning phase. I have found it’s very important to integrate a lot of conversation during sessions; this is more rewarding for the clients and I get an excuse to do what I love: chat!

I major in education and minor in writing and rhetoric. As an international student, I have experienced many difficulties writing and speaking in English that native speakers don't have to face. Having been through a hard time learning to write myself, I am confident that I can help other international students improve their writing. In writing, I value the structure and the flow from one idea to the next. So far, I have taken classes in all four CORE areas, plus linguistics, astronomy, math, education, LGBTQ studies, and many classes in other departments. I plan to experience a liberal arts education in its entirety, so please feel free to bring your essay to me, no matter the topic.

I'm a sophomore who will most likely major in English, but my academic interests also include philosophy, music and psychology. When I'm not in the writing center, I'm probably holed up in WRCU, Colgate's radio station, working as Music Director and debating other DJs about the many merits of Bruce Springsteen. I'd love to try my hardest to help with any and all issues you may encounter when writing a paper!

Christina Crowley '14
I am a sophomore planning to major in history. I understand how hard it is to get started on a paper and I love to discuss ideas and thoroughly outline to get the writing process going. I like to focus on the clarity of the argument put forward and make sure that every aspect of the paper serves as support of that argument.

Keith England '14
I am from Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago and am a loyal supporter of all sports teams from Chicago and the University of Michigan. I plan on majoring in economics and minoring in writing and rhetoric, hopefully fitting some music and literature classes in between. I love writing and editing, and hope to some day go into publishing.

Samantha Frankel '14
I am a sophomore and will be majoring in mathematical economics with a minor in writing and rhetoric. This combination of major and minor may seem unlikely; however, it illustrates that even someone with a mind for computing and problem solving can find both pleasure and success in writing and public address. I serve as both a writing and speaking consultant at the center and am trained to help you with presentations and speeches, in addition to essays and papers. Stop by at any time and I will be more than willing to help you in any way that I can!

Jessica Gunzel '14
I am a sophomore majoring in international relations and minoring in peace and conflict studies. I have experience writing many different types of papers, from close-text analyses to larger research papers. I am eager to assist with all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to proofreading the final draft, as well as serve as a sounding board for any ideas or challenges you would like to work through for your paper. So even if you would just like to come in for a casual chat about your ideas and concerns during the writing process, I would love to hear from you!

Claire Littlefield '14
My academic interests lie in the social sciences. I particularly enjoy studying history and political science, but I have experience writing creatively and analytically on a variety of topics.
