The Writing and Speaking Center will have openings for new peer consultants to begin in fall 2012. Complete applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012.
In addition to demonstrating strong writing and/or speaking skills, the successful applicant will be personable, reliable, and able to help others learn. If you are interested in applying, please bear in mind:
- Rising sophomores (current first-year students) are especially encouraged to apply.
- The position is competitive; we accept only about 15% of applicants each year.
- Students from all majors are welcome to apply.
- You are eligible even if you plan to study abroad next year.
- You must be able to work at least five evening hours each week of the semester, excluding breaks.
- The application deadline is strict; late applications will not be accepted.
Make sure your name appears on each of the following documents. Please single-side documents (except for the writing sample) and do not staple any pages together. Packets should include:
-
A completed application
cover sheet listing the names of
three faculty references. A cover sheet is available here (
PDF) or in 212 Alumni Hall.
-
A
résumé.
Career Services can provide excellent assistance, including instruction, models, and other resources for creating a professional résumé.
-
A statement of interest. This is the most important document in your application and should be an essay of no more than 2 single-spaced pages explaining why you want to become a peer consultant and describing the special strengths you would bring to the position. We look for engaging, well-written statements that give us a sense of your personality and motivation. Experienced peer consultants and the director are your audience for the essay.
-
An official or unofficial academic transcript from the Colgate registrar's office.
-
A college writing sample. This should be a clean copy of a paper you submitted for a class here at Colgate -- preferably a Core class, if you have taken one. You should submit the essay in its original form (i.e., unrevised after receiving a grade or feedback). The essay should demonstrate your analytic writing skills; please do not submit fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction. The paper must be between 2 and 15 pages long. With it, please include a cover sheet on which you quote the original prompt or briefly describe the assignment. If you have any concerns or questions about this requirement, please contact the director (see below).
Incomplete applications will not be considered. Unless you are abroad, do not e-mail your application materials. Instead, address your sealed application packet to Jenn Lutman, Director, Colgate University Writing and Speaking Center, and mail or deliver it to 216 Alumni Hall on or before 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012. If you have questions, e-mail or call Professor Lutman at (315) 228-7376.
