Working Group on the Campus Master Plan

Colgate recently completed a campus master plan in collaboration with the architecture and planning firm Sasaki Associates. The plan addresses how to best meet the university’s academic mission, future campus needs, and commitment to sustainability through the ongoing evolution of our physical space.

To effectively garner input and feedback from the Colgate community, developments in the master planning process were shared online at colgatemasterplan.com.

Status

The presentation of the final master plan report to the Board of Trustees on January 24, 2014 completed the Advisory and Planning Committee's (APC) charge to this working group. The master planning process has now entered the implementation phase.

Sasaki Associates

Given our need for the use of external expertise and the community engagement necessary to create a useful and dynamic plan, Colgate elected to partner with Sasaki Associates to research and develop an effective campus master plan.

Original Charge to the Committee

Under the direction of the APC and in conjunction with the APC’s efforts to guide the development of a new strategic plan for Colgate, this subcommittee was formed to develop a campus master plan for the Colgate campus, facilities, and land.

A campus master plan is typically centered on the question of "How can an institution best use its land and buildings to meet its future program needs?" That broad charge remains; however, a plan that looks too far into the future runs the risk of being so broad that it is inconsequential soon after its completion. As a result, this campus planning process will focus on more near-term (up to 15 years) campus utilization issues. We envision that the campus master plan will respond to a set of specific questions, challenges, and opportunities facing Colgate as we plan for the future. Areas of inquiry will not only focus on the inevitable long-term expansion of facilities but must also address the university’s commitment to sustainability and responsible land use.

The last Colgate campus master plan was completed in 1990 with the assistance of Dober, Lidsky, Craig & Associates, Inc. In January of 1997, a “Lower Campus Master Plan Report” was issued in collaboration with Cooper, Robertson & Partners. Given the span of time and the campus facility changes that have taken place over the last two decades, it is clear that a new campus planning effort is necessary for Colgate. The subcommittee will consult with the Campus Planning and Physical Resource Committee (CPPRC) throughout this process.
