As instantaneous communication makes distance inconsequential, 21st-century communities are as easily international as they are local.
Our students will be successful citizens in tomorrow’s world communities because, having developed the skills of citizenship applicable throughout the world, they will be prepared to imagine issues from many perspectives and bridge disparate points of view.
They will also define diversity not as tolerating difference, or even as justice, but as an opportunity to expand their understanding and knowledge for the good of all.
While at Colgate, they will:
• Participate in Colgate’s already strong international programs and integrate and reinforce what they learn during those programs through experiences they have when they return to campus.
• Be involved in a model four-year residential education system where all students will have opportunities for leadership and personal growth available at few other colleges.
• Be part of a diverse community of students, faculty members, administrators, and staff. Twenty-first century leaders will function in diverse communities, and Colgate’s campus will mirror that diversity.
• Learn the real meaning of doing public work by partnering with the village and town of Hamilton and in upstate New York, where Colgate is contributing to the region’s vitality and development.
• Reap the benefits of a model intercollegiate athletics program developed thoughtfully in the context of the national conversations about the role of collegiate athletics.
