Administrative

Bill Ferguson
Director and Chief of Campus Safety

Bill was appointed director in July 2009.  He has 34 years of progressive law enforcement experience with nine years of leadership and management in college and university campus public safety organizations.

He started in 1974 as a police officer for the Town of DeWitt, Onondaga County, N.Y.  During his 26-year career with the DeWitt Police Department, Bill received promotions to investigator, sergeant, lieutenant, and deputy chief. 

In October 2000, he became a captain of patrol for the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety.  During his five years at SU, Bill served as the interim director and deputy director/deputy chief. 

In July 2005, he accepted the position of associate director/deputy chief for the Ithaca College Office of Public Safety, where he served until July 2009.

Bill has a master's in public administration from Syracuse University's Maxwell School and a bachelor's  in music education from Murray State University.  He also has an associate's degree in criminal justice from Onondaga County Community College.

He is a New York State certified general topics instructor for police, and also an instructor for the U.S Department of Education federal compliance regulations known as the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.  Bill is a member of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Northeast Colleges and Universities Security Association, and the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police.

In his spare time, Bill enjoys spending time with his wife, Patty,  their three daughters and three son-in-laws, and two grandchildren.  He also enjoys fishing, playing music, and working on house and barn construction projects.

Gert started with the Campus Safety Department in July 1983 after receiving an associate's degree in criminal justice from Corning Community College, Corning, N.Y.

Gert has since served as a training officer, investigator, officer-in-charge and was appointed assistant director in March 1997 after a national search was conducted. Gert is a member of Northeast Colleges and Universities Security Association and International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. Gert has extensive training in campus law enforcement issues.

Sue has been with the department for 15 years. Sue started as a night dispatcher and is now the department's secretary. She co-instructs the Defensive Driving Class and the Student Van driving classes as well.

On October 28, 2008, Sue completed DNA awareness training for Campus Law Enforcement Officers, sponsored by NYSCASA at Syracuse University.

Sue is also a member of the LGBTQ Supporters Network.

Gary successfully completed and graduated from the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy in September 2004.  In 2006, Gary was promoted to the position of shift supervisor and is the department's Fire Safety Coordinator.

Gary graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College with an associate's degree in criminal justice in 2002. Gary has also completed internships with the Oneida County district attorney's office, bankruptcy court, family court, and Utica City Court.

Gary has also gained experience in the youth Empowerment Program, helping troubled youths better their lives.

In June 2002, Gary attended and graduated from the New Hampshire University and College Public Safety Officer Training Academy at Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire.

In his off-duty time, Gary enjoys song writing. Gary also participates in outdoor sports like skiing and soccer.




Michael Sitts Michael Sitts

Mike is one of the department's sworn police officers with the Village of Hamilton. Mike graduated from the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy on Jan. 13, 2002. He is also a New York state certified police officer and security officer.

In May 2006, Mike was promoted to the position of shift supervisor. Mike is also a NYS certified Field Training Officer and General Topics Instructor. Mike has attended the Northeast Safety and Security Training Academy and at the Capitol District Public Safety Consortium at RPI.

Mike is also trained in first aid and certified in CPR.

Mike and his family reside in the Hamilton area. While off duty, Mike enjoys hunting and fishing.




Lana Paul Lana Paul

Lana is the Campus Safety department's investigator.

Lana has successfully received New York state certification as a criminal investigator and evidence technician. Lana received certification in crime scene and evidence photography in 1998. Lana successfully completed certification as a 911 emergencydDispatcher at the New York State Fire Training Academy in Montour Falls, NY.

Lana graduated from the Delaware County Peace Officer Academy. Lana also graduated from the Northeast Safety and Security Training Academy at Middlebury College in Vermont and the New England Campus Security Officer Training Academy at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Lana is CPR and first-aid certified.

On October 28, 2008, Lana completed DNA awareness training for Campus Law Enforcement Officers, sponsored by NYSCASA at Syracuse University.

Lana is also a member of the LGBTQ Supporters Network. Lana's interests include spending time with her family, playing fast-pitch softball, volleyball, and spending a lot of time with her Yorkshire Terriers Micro and Mazey.

Steve Cook Steve Cook

Steve came to the Campus Safety Department in February 1996 with an academic background in criminal justice. He also participated in an internship program with the Madison County Sheriff's Department in 1993 sponsored by Mohawk Valley Community College and received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1995.

Steve received his New York State certification as a security officer in 1995. Steve is also certified in First Aid and CPR.

Steve is employed part-time with the Village of Hamilton Police Department. Steve graduated from the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy on Sept. 28, 2002, as a New York state certified police officer.

Steve graduated from the New Hampshire University and College Public Safety Officers Academy at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire. Steve also attended and graduated from the New England Campus Security Officers Training Academy at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Steve is certified in crime scene and evidence photography. Steve has attended several Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training seminars and anti-Terroism awareness training at SUNY Morrisville sponsored by St. Petersburg College and the Florida National Guard. Steve has also attended many other campus safety and law enforcement training courses.

Recently, Steve received DNA awareness and evidence collection training for Campus Law Enforcement Officers, sponsored by NYSCASA at Syracuse University.

Steve is one of the department's field training officers and is a NYS certified Field Training Officer. Steve also maintains the Campus Safety Department's web page. Any questions, comments or suggestions for this web page may be directed to Steve at the e-mail address above.

Deb DuBois

Deb is a graduate of John Abbott College located in Ste. Anne de Bellvue, Quebec, Canada.

Deb is a New York state certified EMT-D and New York state certified basic firefighter. She also completed the New York State Farm Medic course in May of 2000.

In 2003, Deb attended and successfully completed the New England Campus Safety Officer Training Academy hosted by Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

In 2004, Deb attended and successfully completed the New York State Emergency 911 Dispatching Academy in Montour Falls, NY.

On October 28, 2008, Deb completed DNA awareness training for Campus Law Enforcement Officers, sponsored by NYSCASA at Syracuse University.

While off duty Deb spends time with her husband and son.

Deb is also a NASCAR fan and volunteers her time with the Boy Scouts.




Dan Furner

Dan is a New York state certified security officer and general topics security instructor. Dan graduated from Herkimer Community College with an associate's degree in criminal justice. Dan is also a part-time Police Officer with the Village of Hamilton and is also a New York state certified first responder.

Dan is volunteer Firefighter in the North Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department. Dan in also a co-operator of a family owned farm.





Dave GanttDave Gantt

Dave is a New York state certified Police and Security officer. Dave Graduated from the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy in January 2008 as a NYS certified Police Officer. Dave received his Certification as a security officer in 2003.

In June 2003, Dave attended and graduated from the New England Campus Safety Officer Training Academy at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Dave was hired as a part-time patrol officer and a part-time dispatcher. Dave was promoted to a full time officer in July 2003.

Dave is also a skilled martial artist. Dave trained with Master Hidy Ochiai of Washin-Rye karate in Vestal, NY for 30 years. Dave has earned the rank of yo dan, 4th degree black belt.

Dave is the drummer for the Broad Street Blues Band out of Norwich, NY. Dave also enjoys weight lifting, music, motorcycle riding, working on and driving muscle cars.

In addition, Dave is the owner and operator of Sherburne Jewelers in Sherburne, NY, and has two daughters.





Robert Kane

Bob is a New York State Certifed Security Officer. Bob graduated from the Central New York Police Academy sponsored by the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department in February 1996. In 1998, Bob graduated from the Northeast Safety and Security Training Academy held at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, NH.

On October 28, 2008, Bob completed DNA awareness training for Campus Law Enforcement Officers, sponsored by NYSCASA at Syracuse University.

Bob is one of the department's training officers for new employees. Bob provides drug and alcohol education to first-year students. Bob is the departments DAWG (Drug and Alcohol aWareness Group) representative. Bob is also one of the department's Operation Lockdown representatives.

Before coming to the Campus Safety Department Bob served as a petty officer in the U.S. Navy from September 1988 to September 1994. Bob was an electronics technician, storekeeper and worked on submarines and surface ships.

While off duty, Bob enjoys boating, target shooting, and riding his ATV. He is also an avid Miami Dolphins fan.





Kirk Stewart

K.C. graduated from the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy on Jan. 13, 2002, as a New York state certified police officer. K.C. received state certification as a security officer in 1994.

K.C. received his associate's degree in criminal justice in 1994 from Mohawk Valley Community College. K.C. also successfully completed APCO Certification for Public Safety Dispatchers at the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY. K.C. graduated from the Northeast Safety and Security Academy held at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1997. He is trained in first aid and certified in CPR.

K.C. is a Campus Safety bike patrol officer and maintains all equipment for the bike patrol program. K.C. also actively participates in other programming such as Operation ID, and Adopt A Hall.

K.C. is employed part time as a patrol officer with the Village of Hamilton Police Department. K.C. is also a volunteer for the Hamilton Fire Department.  K.C. enjoys hunting and weight training.





Dan Tucker

Dan graduated from Stockbridge Valley High School in 2002 and graduated from Morrisville State College in 2004 with an associate's degree in residential construction.

Dan is a New York State certified Security Officer and trained in CPR.

While off duty, Dan enjoys participating in athletics, hunting, attending concerts and spending time with his family.

Judy Murphy

Judy began work at Colgate 23 years ago as a switchboard/security radio operator. Since then, she has been a telephone systems coordinator and switchboard operator helping to ensure that all telephone needs were met.

Judy is now a dispatcher for the Campus Safety Department and maintains her position as telephone systems coordinator for Colgate University. On her off-duty hours, Judy enjoys music, dancing, camping, target shooting and when possible, motorcycling.





JoAnn Papelino

 JoAnn has worked at Colgate since 1978 when she started as a switchboard operator/security radio operator.

In July 1995, she attended the NYS Fire Training Academy and received APCO certification as a public safety dispatcher. JoAnn successfully completed the advanced public safety dispatchers course at the New York State Academy of Fire Science, Montour Falls, NY.

JoAnn is very proficient with computers and enjoys working with them.

Off duty, JoAnn enjoys spending time with her numerous pets.



Amanda Thayer

Amanda is a full-time dispatcher, and a New York State Certified Security Officer and trained in first aid and CPR.

In 2007, Amanda attended Campus Safety Officer Training at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.  Amanda also attended Basic Training for Dispatchers at the Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY.

Amanda also serves part-time in the New York Army National Guard.

Cate began work as a part-time patrol officer. She moved into a full- time dispatching position within the department in December of 1996. Cate brings years of experience with her from previously working as a communications officer for the Albany (N.Y.) Police Department.

Scott Sheldon

Scott was formerly an auxillary officer with the Campus Safety Department and recently became a part-time patrol officer and dispatcher.

Scott attended SUNY Cortland from September 1997 to May 2000 where he studied education.

Scott is currently a tool designer for the Raymond Corporation. Scott was formely a security officer with the company.

Scott brings his experience as a security officer with the Raymond Corporation and as a Dispatcher for the SUNY Cortland University Police Department to Colgate.

Scott also spent 6 1/2 years in the United States Air Force as a Firefighter. He also taught fire safety training on base and visited elementary schools during fire prevention week.

Scott is married with four children and enjoys attending Syracuse basketball and football games.




David Holcomb David Holcomb

David graduated from Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls, PA in 1988. He spent 12 yeard on active duty in the United States Army as a Combat Medic, serving during the first Gulf War. Currently, Dave is the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Medical Section with the 107th Military Police Company in the New York Army National Guard.

Along with his military background, Dave brings law enforcement experience to the Colgate University Campus Safety Department. Dave graduated from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy in December 2000 as a certified Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff. He was employed by the Alexandria Sheriff's Office, Alexandria, Virginia, from June 1997 to January 2006. In, 2004, Dave received the William H. Truesdale award for outstanding public service to the citizens of the City of Alexandria, VA.

Dave holds a full time position as nurse at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. Dave is also a volunteer firefighter with the Hamiton Fire Department. He holds a New York State Practical Nursing License and is Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician.

Dave is currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Utica College.

In his spare time, Dave enjoys various outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and running.

Dave lives in Hamilton with his wife Beth, and their two children, Nicole and Andrew.





Steve Calvert

 Steve came to the Campus Safety Department after retiring from the John Deere company after 31 years of service.

Steve is a New York Certified Security Officer and trained in first aid and CPR.

Steve is responsible for inspecting and maintaining fire extinguishers in campus facilities and other fire safety related duties.  Steve also attended a fire extinguisher maintenance course at the Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY. 

Steve has spent 17 years as a volunteer in both the Kirkville and Munnsville Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services.

Steve also served in the Army National Guard for 9 years.

Steve enjoys spending time with his family and participating in various outdoor activities.  Steve also enjoys attending NASCAR races.

 


Heather Cole

Before working at Colgate, Heather was employed by the Oneida County Sheriff's Department in the Corrections Division.  Heather is currently seeking full time employment as a Police Officer.

Heather is a graduate of Mount Markham High School where she participated in an internship with the Oneida County Sheriff's Department. Heather earned her associates degree in Criminal Justice from Herkimer County Community College and plans to pursue a bachelor's degree.

Heather is a New York State Certified basic EMT, continuing her training as a Critical Care Technician.  Heather is also a volunteer firefighter with the Bridgewater, NY Fire Department and continuing training as a firefighter.

Heather resides with her husband, dog and two cats. 


Michael Lapp

Before working at Colgate, Mike served in the United States Airforce. Mike retired after 15 years of service.

Mike has a bachelor's degree in professional aeronautics and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Civil Engineering.  Mike also holds four associates degrees in human resources, occupational teaching, teaching and aeronautics. 

Mike is an active member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church.  Mike also enjoys cross country skiing, wood working, hiking, watersports and spending time with his family. 

Mike and his wife, Amy have been married since 1997.  Mike resides in Hamilton with his wife, and two daughters.  Mike also lived in Homer, NY prior to joining the Air Force.
