Hamilton, N.Y.- Medeski, Martin and Wood, a popular jazz trio from New York City, will perform at Colgate University on Friday, November 3. The concert, sponsored by Colgate Activities Board (CAB), will be held in the Hall of Presidents of the Student Union and the doors will open at 7:30. Tickets, which are $10 for Colgate students and $15 for non-Colgate students, are available through the Office of Student Activities by calling (315) 228-7320. All tickets are general admission. Composed of pianist John Medeski, percussionist Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood, the trio has an undeniably original sound. Aspects of jazz, funk, gospel, hip-hop, and rock are seamlessly fused together to produce a result that evades categorization. Their 1992 debut, Notes from the Underground, featured the band’s reinvention of classics by jazzmen like Wayne Shorter and Duke Ellington, and 1995’s Friday Afternoon in the Universe is the closest they have come to fully capturing the improvisational flair that fires their live performances. After releasing 1996’s Shack-man, the trio signed with Blue Note, releasing Combustication in 1998. A Combustication Remix EP was issued in April of 1999; Tonic followed a year later, marking both the group’s first officially released live album and their first acoustic recording. Founded in 1819, Colgate University is a nationally ranked, highly selective, residential, liberal arts college. Situated on a rolling 515-acre campus in central New York State, Colgate University attracts motivated students with diverse backgrounds, interests and talents.
