Transfer Admission

Students interested in transfer admission may access the Common Application for Transfer Admission at http://www.commonapp.org.

Colgate defines a transfer student as a student who has matriculated in a college-level degree program, is a high school graduate, and wishes to attend a different institution. The deadline for applying for the spring term is a postmark of November 1, the deadline for the fall term is a postmark of March 15.

Students enrolled in their first semester of college who wish to transfer to Colgate in the spring term will be considered on a very selective basis.

Admission to Colgate with advanced standing is possible twice during the calendar year through three different programs: transfer student, visiting student, and special student. Students interested in applying under one of these programs should consider carefully the characteristics of each. These frequently asked questions address the common concerns that arise during the transfer application process and provide a strong foundation for your search.

How does Colgate define a transfer student, visiting student, and special student?

Colgate defines a transfer student as any student who has matriculated in a college-level degree program, is a high school graduate, and wishes to attend a different institution. Most successful transfer applicants have achieved a GPA at or above the 3.0 (B) grade level during their previous college experience. The average GPA for admitted transfer students is 3.5.

The visiting student program allows students from other colleges to attend Colgate on a temporary basis. Visiting students are limited to one term of enrollment at Colgate.

A special student opportunity is limited to a few area residents who, for personal reasons, wish to enroll for less than a full course load.

Visiting students and special students are not eligible for financial aid from Colgate and do not receive priority in the scheduling of classes.

Back to the questions

Do I follow the same application procedure if I applied before?

Students who previously applied for first-year admission are welcome to apply for transfer admission by submitting the Common Application for Transfer Admission. The Office of Admission retains application materials from the past two academic years and will refer to previous application data during the transfer review process. Standardized test scores do not need to be forwarded if they were submitted with the first-year application.

Students who applied for transfer admission previously and are interested in reapplying must submit a new Common Application for Transfer Admission. To reapply as transfer applicant, the transfer committee requires an updated transcript, application fee, essays, current grade report, and current recommendations. Standardized test scores do not need to be forwarded if they were submitted with the first application.

Back to the questions

Does Colgate accept the Common Application for Transfer Admission?

Colgate uses the Common Application for Transfer Admission exclusively. Transfer applicants must also submit the Colgate transfer supplement.

Back to the questions

What type of financial aid is available to transfer applicants?

It is rare for Colgate to be able to offer need-based financial aid to transfer students. This applies for both domestic and international transfer applicants. If aid is available for transfer students it is awarded based on demonstrated need. Colgate does not offer academic merit scholarships.

Applications for admission and financial assistance are not considered complete until all the required financial aid forms are received by the Office of Admission, postmarked by the application deadline.

Colgate grant funds are awarded for full-time study up to a total of eight semesters. Full-time attendance at another institution from which courses are transfered to complete Colgate degree requirements will reduce this eligibility.

Back to the questions

What is the total cost for the academic year?

  2009-2010 full-year tuition $40,690
  Room & Board $9,970
  Student Activity Fee $280
  Total $50,940
In addition, at least $1,940 should be allowed for books, supplies, normal travel, clothing, and incidentals. Colgate requires that students have health and accident insurance. Students who are not already covered through their parents' plans can purchase coverage through the university.

Back to the questions

How many of my current course credits will transfer to Colgate? What class year will I be when I register?

Transfer credit will normally be considered for liberal arts courses bearing the equivalent of three semester hours or five quarter-hours worth of credit when the student earns grades of C or better. Grades of C- or lower are not granted credit, nor are courses taken as pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory. A student may transfer a maximum of 16 Colgate course credits to Colgate. At Colgate, one course generally carries one course credit, which is equivalent to four semester hours. The registrar completes official credit evaluations upon receipt of official college transcript(s) for all college-level courses completed and Advanced Placement score reports.

The following defines academic standing and required Colgate credits to achieve the listed standing:

Junior Standing: 14 transferred Colgate credits
Sophomore Standing: 6 transferred Colgate credits

Back to the questions

What support services are available to transfer students?

Transfer students benefit from many administrative and faculty resources. The transfer administrative advisor coordinates the orientation program and academic standard issues. The academic adviser, a faculty member in a student's major, consults with the student to develop educational goals and plans. In addition, the residential adviser provides support in dealing with student life issues.

Back to the questions

What extracurricular opportunities exist at Colgate?

Students are involved in more than 180 clubs and organizations ranging from a full concert orchestra to a campus radio station, from the College Republicans and College Democrats to four a capella singing groups. In addition, Colgate fields 25 men's and women's Division I varsity teams, 40 competitive club teams, approximately 20 intramural sports, and a comprehensive outdoor education program. Colgate students interact with the local community while working with the Center for Outreach, Voluteerism, and Education (COVE). The Colgate Activities Board sponsors concerts, comedians, speakers, movies, and much more. With all of these options available, approximately 96 percent of the student body remains on campus during the weekends. For further information on the extracurricular options at Colgate, please visit Student Life.

Back to the questions

Will I be able to live on campus? Do I have a choice of where will live?

All transfer students will live on campus. The university provides rich and diverse options for campus living, including traditional residence halls, Broad Street communities, townhouses, and apartment complexes. Housing placement is based on the entering class year of the transfer student. For more information see the residential education website.
