Outreach

Upstate Institute
The Upstate Institute provides resources for many of the outreach programs funded through the HHMI grant.

Science Affiliates teachers program
The mission of the Science Affiliates program has been to enhance science education in the public schools of central New York by offering teacher workshops and a forum for conversation to promote science teaching and learning in grades K-12.

Visualization lab
The visualization lab will expand the reach of the system by developing novel productions for the use of chemistry, biology, computer science, geology, neuroscience, art, and other courses.  This will be produced and designed  by Colgate students, faculty, and local science teachers.  All projects will be used in teaching and will be distributed free of charge to the Digistar Users Group, which includes members from more than 80 science museums, universities, and planetariums worldwide.

Colgate Science and Sports Camp
The Science and Sports Camp was developed by Janna Pistiner, a Colgate alumna and science teacher at The Renaissance Charter School. Colgate Science and Sports Camp will specifically target students who normally would not have the opportunity to become exposed to science beyond their high school classrooms. Participants will include youths from inner-city New York, from ethnically diverse schools in the nearby city of Utica, and from rural school districts around Hamilton, N.Y.  The camp's goal is to get motivated but underprivileged students excited about and engaged in science, scientific research, and the possibility of pursuing science as a field of study and a career. It will also expose them to life on a residential college campus.
