Individuals with an interest in the fundamental questions about the nature of matter and the universe or with a drive to solve challenging scientific problems should consider majoring in one of the programs offered by the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Colgate offers bachelor degrees in physics, astronomy-physics, and astrogeophysics as well as a 3-2 pre-engineering program with affiliated engineering schools.
We place much emphasis in active engagement of students in small classes and in one-on-one work with faculty in research. The average class size for majors in our department is fifteen. We graduate an average of twelve major per year. About a third of them go on to graduate school. Our former majors receive doctorate and masters degrees at the rate of two to three per year.
