Wilderness First Responder Course with Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA)

Dates:  Jan. 3-9, 2010

Where:  Colgate University campus and local area

Cost:   $650, Colgate students.  Includes all meals.
             Colgate students will be able to stay in their residence halls on campus.

           $650,  Local community members (includes lunch only)

            $700, Non-local participants.  Includes all meals.

Lodging:  Free lodging at Colgate's rustic, wood heated yurt is available for the course.  With heavy snowfall, this includes a one half mile ski or snowshoe in and out.  Tent space and shower facilities available on campus.  Other lodging is also available in town at an additional cost. Meals will still be provided.

$300 deposit to secure space in the 7-day WFR course due by December 1, 2009.

Course Description:  This course is recommended for all outdoor professional and enthusiasts who spend time in remote areas.  This 7-day course is considered the industry standard First Aid course for working in the Outdoor Education Field for programs such as NOLS and Outward Bound. The curriculum exceeds the basics of First Aid and emphasizes the skills needed to perform back country wilderness rescues that may involve extended care. Wilderness Medical Associates professionals will be teaching this course.  Mornings are often devoted to lectures and exams. Afternoons are devoted to practical hands-on sessions and rescue simulations and video critique. Evenings are reserved for study and assignments.

Prerequisites:  Students must be at least 16 years of age to participate in this course. Sixteen and 17 year old's must have proof of parental consent. Textbooks:  the cost of the course includes a book of lecture handouts,  a workbook, SOAP notes, the Wilderness Medical Associates Field Guide and a Backcountry Wilderness Medical Guide.

Certification: All students who successfully complete the WFR course will receive a WFR certification card, an anaphylaxis certification card and BLS-CPR certification card from Wilderness Medical Associates. These certifications remain valid for three years.

Course Description:  This two-day course is for WMA graduates ONLY.  Upon successful completion of this course you will re-new your Wilderness Medical Associates WFR,  Anaphylaxis and BLS-level CPR certifications.  WMA WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B  or Paramedic certificate may also recertify the wilderness portion of their WEMT.
