Summer Research

Every summer 10-20 students gain research experience in chemistry and biochemistry.

Research Facilities

The Department of Chemistry is well-equipped for research.

Academics

chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society, and is nationally recognized for its faculty-student research program. Our research-oriented curriculum culminates in an original senior research project conducted in collaboration with one or more faculty members.

Watch a video about the department's dual beam X-ray diffractometer that is used to study proteins and small molecules.
During the summer, we sponsor a large and vigorous research program. Students also are able to take advantage of the opportunity to study off-campus without interrupting progress toward their majors.

The department has excellent teaching and research facilities, and is equipped with modern instrumentation with which our students gain hands-on experience.

In addition, the Cooley Science Library has an excellent collection of books, monographs, and journals in support of our teaching and research.

Chemistry graduates from Colgate choose a wide range of career paths, including graduate study in chemistry or biochemistry; professional schools in the health sciences; graduate studies in other fields (including business, law, theater, etc.); and direct employment after graduation (especially in pharmaceuticals or other life sciences firms).
