Scholarship programs for study abroad

For more information about these awards, please check out the scholarship websites listed below or contact the Off-Campus Study Office in 201 McGregory Hall.  It is highly recommended that you schedule an advisory session with Off-Campus Study before you begin your application for any of the following scholarship programs.

  • Application deadlines for the Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan (www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj/Bridging/scholarships.html) are the first week of October for studying during the spring semester and the first week of April for studying during the fall semester.  (Please check the website for exact deadline dates.)  Undergrads majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite.  Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a U.S. college before and during the time they are studying abroad. Recipients receive up to $2,500 for a semester-long program.
  • The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (www.iie.org/gilman) deadlines are the first week of October for studying during the spring semester and the first week of April for studying in the fall semester.  (Please check the Gilman website for exact deadline dates.)  The Gilman program is seeking applicants who are U.S. citizens and recipients of a Pell grant. Students who have traditionally been underrepresented in education abroad are preferred.  The Gilman Scholarship Program offers up to $5,000 per semester to recipients. Scholarships for summer study are available only to science and math students.  Applicants are not required to study math/science while abroad to be eligible for the scholarship.  Deadlines for summer study are early October (preferred) and early April.  (Please check website for exact deadline dates.)
  • The NSEP Boren Scholarship Program (www.borenawards.org) offers scholarships for fall and spring semesters.  The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who wish to study outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Language study must be a component of the study abroad program.  Scholarships for summer study are available only to science and math students. The maximum award is $8,000 for a summer program, $10,000 for a semester program. The campus deadline for contacting the Off-Campus Study Office regarding your intent to apply is the first Friday in December. Please meet with an advisor at Off-Campus Study in 201 McGregory Hall before beginning the on-line application.
For scholarships to study one of eleven critical need foreign languages during the summer:
  • The United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) (www.clscholarship.org) offer overseas scholarships for intensive summer language institutes in eleven critical languages (Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu). The application deadline each year will be in early November.  (Check website for exact deadline date.)
